Reading Better and Faster
ANOTHER HEAVY HOME DEFEAT FOR THE GRECIANS.
Dick Smart's place at inside-right was taken by Ken Wilkins, Exeter City's newcomer from Southampton, who was signed last Monday. Mitchell was retained at centre-forward, while Clark was preferred to Rowe and Coley to Fallon in the defence.
EXETER CITY 1 READING 4.
Saturday, November 3rd,
at St James's Park.
Attendance 8,795, receipts £643. 5s. 6d.
City: Lear; Warren, Clark; Coley, Goddard, Davey; Regan, Wilkins, Mitchell, Mackay, McClelland.
Reading: McBride; Moyse, Wicks; Lewis, Brice, Johnston; Simpson, Edelston, Owens, Henley, Bainbridge.
Although the City scored first against Reading they were no match for the stronger and altogether livelier opposition. Only two players in an outclassed City combination acquitted themselves favourably. They were Lear and Mackay, the last named being the one member of the front line to show constructive ideas and ability to carry out his work at the requisite speed. Wilkins made a few thoughtful passes in the first half, but little of him was seen subsequently, and, on today's showing he, like many of his team-mates, needs more pace. Mitchell was never in the picture at all.
In the fourth minute Regan opened the scoring with a flashing oblique drive into the top corner of the net. Edelston equalised for Reading after 20 minutes, and from a penalty awarded against Coley for a foul on Henley, Lewis scored with an unstoppable drive. Reading's goals after the interval came from Edelston and Simpson and Exeter retired a badly beaten side.
