Headington (h)

Newport County 4-0 ECFC
Attendance: 10920

City Beaten
WEAK EVERYWHERE BUT IN GOAL.

Exeter City are in the doldrums. Matching their inept display against Reading last week was the uninspiring performance at Somerton Park, when a four nil defeat would have been a crushing rout but for Graham Lear, a magnificently defiant goalkeeper.

NEWPORT COUNTY 4 EXETER CITY 0.

Saturday, November 10th, at Somerton Park.

Attendance 10,000.

Inadequately protected by rear guard colleagues who neglected even the fundamentals of close marking and proper covering, Lear leaped in all directions to clutch or parry the multitude of shots rained on him. All four of Newport's goals were scored in the second half, and three of them coming in a six-minutes spell, were proof of the hopelessly confused state of Exeter 1 defence at that stage. S The Exeter forwards, apart from McClelland, offered no threat to the Newport defence on the heavy ground, and the half-backs, notably Doyle, were repeatedly beaten for speed. With the full-backs unable to keep in contact with Birch and Moore it will be readily seen that the City were a team with weaknesses in all departments except goal. Newport's goals were shared by Parker and Shergold, two each.

Newport: Pope; Staples, Haines; Newall, Wilcox, Donaldson; Birch, Beattie, Parker, Shergold, Moore.

City: Lear; Warren, Clark; Fallon, Goddard, Doyle; McClelland, Smart, Wilkins, Mackay, Regan.

Southern League
City Reserves v Headington

At St James's Park the City Reserves earned themselves bouquets for a skilful display that contributed to the most entertaining Southern League match seen there this season.

Most of the arts of the game were on show during the first half, when the permutations of the Harrower, Digby, and Hutchings attacks time and time again opened up the Headington defence.
In the second half some of the clever stuff got lost in the flurry of robust exchanges.

Exeter City Reserves 4 Headington United 3.

The time table of scoring was:
Mitchell 7 minutes, Barney (Headington) 24, Mitchell 33; second half: Barney penalty 54 minutes, Harrower 70, Mitchell 73, Harrower own goal 89.

Attendance 2,455, receipts 84. 138. 3d.

City Reserves :-
Salter; Johnstone, Rowe; Harrower, Carter, Reid; Digby, Hutchings, Mitchell, Brown, Howells.
