Match 19
24th November 1951
FA Cup R1
King's Lynn (a)
Southern League
Llanelly (a)
King's Lynn 1-3 ECFC
FA Cup 1st Round
FIRST ROUND OF THE CUP:
KING'S LYNN v EXETER CITY.
McCLELLAND THE STAR OF DOMINANT EXETER TEAM.
King's Lynn was a "Cup-crazy" town today, and queues of supporters of the Linnets, with rattles a-whirring and rosettes prominently displayed for all to see, were outside the ground four hours before the start of the first round F.A. Cup-tie with Exeter City.
Admission was by ticket only, and the capacity ground of over 12,000 gave the teams an enthusiastic welcome. The ground, which is very well appointed for a small club, contains a fair percentage of seating and covered accommodation, and the playing pitch, though on the heavy side, was in reasonably good condition. The weather was cloudy and dull.
KING'S LYNN 1 EXETER CITY 3.
Saturday, November 24th, at Walks Stadium.
Attendance 12,931.
Exeter City's better balance and superior combination won the day, and these assets told heavily against opposition which was hard-working, determined, and plucky, but deficient in defensive ability. At one stage only were Lynn the masters. That was for about a quarter. of an hour in the second half. But the rest of the time it was Exeter nearly all the way.
McClelland was the outstanding player in the City's ranks, and Lear, like the goalkeeper he is, was faultless when his brief but difficult time came.
All the scoring took place in the first half, McClelland (2) and Smart for Exeter and Cliff Whitelum for King's Lynn being the successful marksmen.
King's Lynn: Hooper; Bell, Stephens; Smith, Howe, Heagren; Morris, A.Whitelum, Everitt, C.Whitelum, Dix.
Exeter City: Lear; Warren, Clark; Fallon, Goddard, Davey; McClelland, Smart, Smith, Mackay, Regan.
Referee:- Mr L.A.M.MacKay of London.
