Lear had no chance with any of the shots that beat him, and he and Fallon, who played a hard game throughout, were the only men in the badly beaten City team who measured up to a reasonable standard. Smart tried hard in the attack but the forward line was sadly lacking in balance and penetration.

Play started at a fast pace with both sets of forwards combining well. Worcester took the lead in the sixth minute when Wilcox centred well for DUGGAN to head past Singleton. Exeter's approach work was very good but they were met with a solid defence. Donelly, who was well supplied with passes again brought the best out of Singleton. Half a minute from the interval the home side forced a corner on the left and Mogford deflected the ball to BILLINGTON who smashed it home from ten vards.
