DISPUTED GOAL ROBS CITY OF A POINT.

AN UNDESERVING FATE IN A THRILLING GAME.

Winter made its presence felt at Brighton today, when a gusty south westerly wind, accompanied by driving rain, accounted for the smallest crowd of the season at Goldstone Road. There were barely seven thousand spectators when the teams appeared, and most of them were huddled on the covered bank behind the far-end goal.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION 2 EXETER CITY 1.

Saturday, December 8th,
at Goldstone Road Ground.

Attendance 10,831. Referee:- Mr G.W.Pullin of Bristol. On an afternoon when the half-gale made good football impossible the City fought hard at Brighton, and were unlucky to be defeated by a

hotly disputed goal.

After a blank first half and most of the second, the game underwent a sensational turn when each side scored within a minute. Brighton struck the first blow when Vitty's free kick from near the touch-line sailed into the City net, and directly from the kick off Exeter bore down in an all-out attack in which Fallon equalised.

Brighton: Baldwin; Vitty, Mansell; Willard, McCoy, Wilson; Reed, McNichol, Garbutt, Sirrell, Howard.

Exeter:- Lear; Warren, Rowe; Fallon, Doyle, Davey; Digby, Smart, Mitchell, Mackay, McClelland.

The winning goal was scored eight minutes from the end with the ground shrouded in the rapidly gathering gloom. In a Brighton attack the ball was put into the net by Garbutt and the Exeter team appealed almost to a man, alleging that the scorer was offside.

After consulting a linesmen Mr Pullin allowed the goal to stand but it was an unsatisfactory ending to a match which Exeter did not deserve to lose.

Southern League
City Reserves v Bath City

A stiff breeze and steady rainfall made conditions miserable for the Southern League encounter at St James's Park between the City Reserves and Bath City.

Two goals by Wilkins enabled Exeter City to cross over with a useful lead at half-time but after the interval Bath scored twice as many, running out eventual winners by 4 - 2. When Exeter were awarded a penalty Smith fired the ball straight at the goalkeeper. The City's latest recruit, Dick Walton, signed from Leyton Orient on Thursday, partnered Charlton in the full-back division.

Team:- Salter; Walton, Charlton; Coley, Carter, Harrower; McGrath, Wilkins, Smith, Booth, Howells.
