IPSWICH TOWN KNOCK EXETER OUT OF THE CUP.
GARNEYS HEADS TWO IN A FOUR GOALS VICTORY.
Singleton was recalled to keep goal for Exeter City at Ipswich today because Lear became an influenza victim overnight. In recognition of the fact that he was playing against his old club, Angus Mackay was Exeter's captain for the day, and he made good a start by winning the toss.
IPSWICH TOWN 4 EXETER CITY O.
Second round F.A.Cup at Portman Road, attendance 11,819. Saturday, December 15th 1951.
Ipswich took the lead after 34 minutes, Garneys finding the net with a well-placed header which Singleton was unable to reach. Garneys, a minute or so before the interval, beat Singleton with another headed goal, enabling the home side to cross over with a two-nil lead.
Ipswich: Parry; Feeney, Tyler; Murchison, Rees, Parker; Dobson, McCrory, Garneys, Driver, Roberts.
Exeter: Singleton; Warren, Rowe; Goddard, Doyle, Davey; Digby, Smart, Mitchell, Mackay, McClelland.
Referee:- Mr S.A.Gotts of Birmingham.
Exeter were seldom in the game as an attacking force during the second half, although there were less than ten minutes remaining when Driver obtained the third goal for Ipswich. Just before the end Dobson added the fourth, tapping the ball into the net from a yard's range, after Singleton had been lured out.
Too slow and too weak in every department, Exeter seldom looked like making a fight of this Cup-tie. Ipswich were in the ascendant right from the start and never relaxed their grip.
In fact Exeter's fate was to all intents and purposes settled by the two headers into the net by Garneys before the interval.
City Reserves v Gloucester City
Triumphant City gave a grand display
ONE, two, three, four.... the goals ticked off relentlessly at Longlevens on Saturday, as Gloucester City swept to victory against Exeter City Reserves in one of their best displays of the season.
Riding the wave of success which has carried them to seven points out of their last four matches, Hauses didn't even wet their feet-in a figurative sense. Not a goal was scored against them. Starting off with tremendous speed on a heavy ground, for 15 minutes, dashed against a solid Gloucester defence. Precise football by the visitors' forwards-positively flipping the ba about with first time passes- made one wonder how long Gloucester could remain unshaken..
But Exeter's, brilliance faded, and steadily im- proved. Asher, City leader, set the seal on the changing fortunes of the game when in the 23rd minute he positioned him- self superbly to head in a Buist cross.
From that moment the red and white jerseys were always dictating how play should go. The three essentials for a winning combination-a sound defence, virile half-back line, and effective forwards were happily all in the possession of Gloucester,
Three goals in the second half, a couple from Jenkins, and an other from Asher-by no means - flattered the winners.
Exeter's forward line was crushed by the City backs, and their defence wilted under the rain of Gloucester's attacks. Syd Asher came right into his own in this triumph. He was always worrying Exeter here, there and everywhere. His second goal, like that of Jenkins, was worth going a long way to see. Every man in the front line played confident, dividend-paying football. Barnfield gave an im- pression of leg weariness in first half, then startled with some dazzling bursts which paved the way to scores. The halves helped as much as anybody in the triumph. Myers and Canavan were tireless, and Witt hit tip-top form, coming off unmistakably best in his duels with Smith, Exeter first team leader. Lawson and Peacock revelled in the going, and Jepson made a couple of spectacular saves on the only occasions when he was really tested.
It was a solid and yet sparkling success, satisfyingly reflected in the rise in the Leagus table. More of this sort of football, and the rest of the season should be really exciting for the City.
In the Southern League match at St James's Park the City Reserves also suffered defeat by four goals to nil at the hands of Gloucester City. Scorers for the winners were Asher (2) and Jenkins (2).
