Match 24
25th December 1951
Torquay United (h)
ECFC v Torquay United (W 4-0) Scorers: Smart, Walton, Armes, Mackay
Attendance: 8429
An Impressive Debut.
IVAN ARMES, LATE OF NORWICH CITY.
Transferred from Norwich last Saturday at a fee reported to be "fairly substantial," Ivan Armes made his first appearance for the Grecians on Christmas Day in the initial Devon Derby between the City and Torquay United, at St James's Park.
EXETER CITY 4 TORQUAY UNITED 0.
Christmas Day, 1951,
at St James's Park.
Attendance 8,429, receipts £621. Os. 6d.
Armes made an impressive debut and scored a goal to highlight a great performance. It was in fact a display not bettered by an Exeter wing half-back since the war. Solid in defence, the sturdy new player was magnificent in the finer arts, and demonstrated over and over again that a first-time, low, and accurately placed pass is one of the most effective moves in football. The crowd rose to the newcomer as the teams left the field at the end, and some of the older followers of the City declared that Armes was a modern version of Jimmy Rigby. The City supporters were also appreciative of the grand display in the defence of Warren and the often brilliant work of McClelland.
City: Singleton; Warren, Rowe; Armes, Goddard, Davey; Digby, Smart, Walton, Mackay, McClelland.
Torquay:- G.Webber; McGuinness, Lewis; Towers, E.Webber, Pembery; Shaw, Collins, Northcott, Morrison, Edds.
Referee:- Mr W.J.Edwards of Yeovil. Linesmen:- Messrs R.L. Buscombe and W.H.Davey.
The victory margin did not over-emphasise Exeter's superiority. They played exhibition football and were in complete control except for one brief spell in the second half. Smart's goal in the first period crowned a fast individual breakthrough in the centre of the field.
Walton, with a "jet-propelled" header, Armes with a flashing drive from twenty yards, and Mackay with a well placed shot from an oblique angle, scored Exeter's goals after the interval.
