Torquay United v ECFC (L 5-1)
Scorers: McClelland (pen)
Attendance: 13000

The Tables Turned. "ALL SQUARE" IN THE DEVON DERBY.

After joy came sadness and disappointment. Exeter City, conquerors of Torquay United by four goals to none on Christmas Day, lost the return engagement at Plainmoor by five to one on Boxing Day. The Devon Derby thus ended "all square" taking into account both games.

TORQUAY UNITED 5 EXETER CITY 1.

Boxing Day 1951,
at Plainmoor. Attendance 13,000.

Torquay:- G.Webber; McGuinness, Calland; Brown, E. Webber, Pembery; Shaw, Collins, Northcott, Reid, Thomas.

City: Singleton; Warren, Rowe; Armes, Goddard, Davey; Hutchings, Smart, Walton, Mackay, McClelland. Referee:- Mr W.J.Edwards.

Although badly beaten Exeter were unlucky. The ball ran unkindly for them and their ranks were disorganised from the ninth minute of the game when Goddard had to retire with an injury to his leg. Goddard returned after half an hour, but only to hobble about on the left wing, a limping passenger.

Early exchanges suggested that the City would repeat their triumph of Christmas Day. Neat approach work should have brought them a goal when McClelland's low cross into the centre found Mackay. The inside-left, however, delayed his effort, tried to dribble, and lost possession. Torquay took the lead when Singleton punched out a centre straight to Thomas. The ball was headed to Shaw, who fired it first-time into the net. That was in the nineteenth minute. Three minutes later Collins obtained Torquay's second goal. This was followed by scoring shots by Collins (28 minutes) and Shaw (39).

A penalty kick, successfully taken by McClelland, gave the City their only goal early in the second half. Thereafter Torquay were on top and seven minutes from time Reid scored their fifth goal.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 1 YEOVIL TOWN 1.

In a game of many missed chances at St James's Park the City Reserves and Yeovil drew 1-1.

Yeovil scored first through Short, who was with Exeter last season. He was put through by Simpson and easily beat Salter from close range. In 30 minutes Smith followed up a rebound to shoot hard and low into the net for the equaliser. On the balance of play Exeter should have won.
