Match 31
Aldershot v ECFC
26.01.1952

Southern League
City Reserves v Merthyr

Aldershot v ECFC (L 4-1)
Scorers: McClelland
Attendance: 5560

CITY SCORE FIRST BUT LOSE FOUR - ONE.

GOOD PLAY BY BOTH SIDES ON SNOW COVERED PITCH.

Aldershot was in the grip of winter when Exeter City arrived there to day, and the playing pitch was covered with snow, to a depth of two or three inches in some parts.

After Macauley had tried to get Aldershot in motion Exeter made ground with a left-wing raid, and McClelland dribbled nearly to the goalmouth before he was checked. But after seven minutes the City were one goal up, McClelland beating Houston after Digby had put Smart through on the right wing. Smart's centre was snapped up by McClelland, who beat two opponents before crashing the ball into the top of the net. By half-time, however, Aldershot, playing superb football on the snow caked frozen surface, were in the lead, goals having been obtained by Mortimore and Hobbs.

ALDERSHOT 4 EXETER CITY 1.

Saturday, January 26th,
at the Recreation Ground.

Attendance 5,560.

Although Exeter fought back strongly after the interval and were only prevented from getting an equalising goal when Walton's header struck the crossbar, Aldershot were mostly in command, and winning goals were scored by Laird and Hobbs in the last quarter of an hour. The City's effort's faded after a promising start, and Aldershot, who were more. venturesome on the treacherous pitch, were deserving winners. It was nevertheless an interesting game, and both sides played well despite. the icy conditions.

Exeter City:- Singleton; Warren, Rowe; Armes, Doyle, Davey; Digby, Smart, Walton, Wilkins, McClelland.
