TRIBUTE PAID TO THE LATE KING AT ST JAMES'S PARK.
WATFORD CLEVER BUT LACKING IN THRUST:
CITY WIN THREE NIL.

The fact that vouchers for the City v Argyle match were on sale lured the customers in early today at St James's Park but the attendance at the time of the teams appearing was no more than average. In accordance with instructions issued by the Football Association to all clubs a special tribute was paid to the memory of King George VI. The players and officials lined up in front of the grandstand while a one-minute's silence was observed. Led by the Southern Railway band, the crowd joined in singing firstly "Abide With Me", and then National Anthem.

EXETER CITY 3 WATFORD 0.

Saturday, February 9th 1952, at St James's Park.

Attendance 8,500, receipts £722. 7s. 6a. The City got off to a very good start and were a goal up after seven minutes, Mackay scoring from close range.

Twenty minutes later McClelland set off on one of those sinuous runs so beloved by the "Park" habitues, dribbled past four men, weaving in and out first one way then the other, and then shot the ball into the net as the goalkeeper came out and collided with him. Saphin was hurt badly enough in the collision to need the trainer's attention. Ten minutes before the interval Nolan in attempting to clear, sliced the ball into his own net, thus giving Exeter their third goal.

City: Singleton; Warren, Rowe; Davey, Doyle, Armes; Digby, Smith, Walton, Mackay, McClelland.

Watford:- Saphin; Eggleston, Jones; Brown, Nolan, Kelly; Cook, Meadows, Thompson, Laing, Collins.

The City virtually won this match in the first half. The subsequent effect was to detract from the interest, for Exeter, seemingly content with their three goals advantage, slowed down during the last twenty minutes.

Although clever in midfield Watford lacked thrust, and their forwards were not good enough to pierce the City defence, in which Singleton, Doyle, and Rowe were outstanding.
