EXETER CITY AVENGE THEIR F. A. CUP DEFEAT.
AND GAIN THEIR FIRST EVER VICTORY AT IPSWICH.
In bitterly cold weather Ipswich won the toss and Exeter kicked off on a pitch which was still affected by the recent frosts. This was a game of fluctuating fortunes in which the City were a goal. behind after 14 minutes, equalised 16 minutes later, and secured the lead 10 minutes after that, both goals being scored by Angus Mackay. In the second half Ipswich drew level after 18 minutes, then two late. goals by McClelland and Smith ensured the Grecians of a thrilling and well-deserved victory which went some way towards avenging their Cup defeat on this ground on December 15th.
It was also the first time Exeter had won at Portman Road, the previous League matches having resulted 2-2, 1-2, 0-2, 2-2, 0-1, 0-1 since the first meeting of the clubs just before the war.
IPSWICH TOWN 2 EXETER CITY 4.
Saturday, February 16th,
at Portman Road.

The score correctly measures the City's superiority, for they were the
better side during most of the game. They also adapted themselves to the heavy conditions than did Ipswich. The first half, in particular, was greatly in Exeter's favour, and it was not until late in the game that Ipswich offered any threat to the City's defence.
