Match 35
ECFC v Colchester United
23.02.1952

Southern League
Headington v City Reserves

ECFC 0-0 Colchester United Attendance: 7860

GOALLESS DRAW DID NEITHER SIDE AN INJUSTICE. CITY FORWARDS WERE TOO SLOW.

In the hope of finding the right successor to Keeble, transferred last week to Newcastle United, Colchester experimented with Rowlands, the reserve centre-half, at centre-forward. Injuries and illness caused Exeter to make two changes. The absentees were Digby with influenza and Armes with a groin strain.

EXETER CITY O COLCHESTER UNITED 0.

Saturday, February 23rd 1952
at St James's Park.

Attendance 7,500, receipts £560.

There was only one suitable ending to this dull and featureless match, and from that standpoint the goalless draw did neither of the sides an injustice.

City:- Singleton; Warren, Rowe; Davey, Doyle, Harrower; Regan, Smart, Smith, Mackay, McClelland.

Colchester:- Wright; Harrison, Rookes; Bearryman, Stewart, Elder; Aitchison, Scott, Rowlands, Cutting, Church.

Referee:- Mr W.H.Clapton of London.

Throughout the game the ball was too lively for the respective attacks, and in consequence there were few incidents of note. Rowe in the first half was an outstanding defender, and Doyle was prominent on several occasions when Colchester looked dangerous after the interval. Against keen tackling full-backs and wing-halves the City's forwards were too slow.
