Match 36
1st March 1952
Bristol City (h)
Southern League
Cheltenham (a)
ECFC v Bristol City (D 0-0)
Attendance: 8204
WESTERN CITIES PLAY A GOALLESS DRAW.
GOOD SAVES BY BOTH GOALKEEPERS IN SCRAPPY GAME.
A scrappy game at St James's Park fittingly ended in a draw, although Exeter were unlucky towards the end when shots by Smart and McClelland both rebounded from the Bristol crossbar. The City brought Hutchings in on the right wing, with Regan taking up his old position on the other flank and McClelland leading the attack.
EXETER CITY 0 BRISTOL CITY 0.
Saturday, March 1st 1952,
at St James's Park.
Attendance 7,600,
receipts £588. 8s. 3d.
Exeter City:- Singleton; Warren, Rowe; Davey, Doyle, Harrower; Hutchings, Smart, McClelland, Mackay, Regan.
Bristol City:- Sullivan; Guy, Bailey; Peacock, Roberts, Beasley;
Eisentrager, Steed, Atyeo, Rodgers, Boyd.
Referee:- Mr H.J.Wright of London.
Linesmen:- Messrs W.H.Davey and L.H.H. Burfield.
The City's reshuffled attack was not a success. Their weakness was at inside forward, while McClelland had few opportunities against such a strong and experienced centre-half as Roberts.
Hutchings played as well as any member of the vanguard, but the City's most effective men were Doyle, Rowe, and Harrower. Both goalkeepers distinguished themselves.
The attendance, less than eight thousand, was disappointing for a West
country Derby match.
Southern League
CHELTENHAM TOWN 1 EXETER CITY RESERVES 2.
Within five minutes of the start Cheltenham were one goal ahead of the City Reserves, Mills scoring, but Exeter equalised in the fourteenth minute when Hancock ran in from the left and headed a pass from Booth into the net.
Exeter made their moves quickly, and after twenty minutes from Wilkins found Howells, who scored.
Try as they might in the second half, Cheltenham could not penetrate a determined Exeter defence.
On the other hand, the City did well on several occasions to bring out the best from Coltman, the home side's goalkeeper.
