Lowly Exeter City were expected to fall easy prey to promotion challenging Reading, but it aid not work out that way and City almost gained a point in the last minute. Exeter nad a penalty appeal turned down, when even the Reading Manager who said after the game that ne thought it should have been, The narrow defeat leaves luckless Lacter at the bottom of the League. Exeter fought their hardest, waged a gallant defensive battle and often threatened danger through their lively wingers. Although City were not equals of Reading in balance and while the beaten team were inferior in accuracy and thrust they were always in the same with a chance. The first goal scored by Lewis in the 14th minute resulted from a wonder drive which sent the ball rocketing into the net from 25 yards. Two minutes later Regan scored Citys only oal and the manner in which he snapped up the chance was creditable. So was the display which was more in accord with the Duggie of old. The winner came from Bainbridge midway through the 2nd half.

A match full or thrills, City had slightly the better of the exchanges before the interval. Reading were in command for long periods in the 2nd half. Star performer for Exeter was Doyle, the Keystone on the defence which strove manfully throughout the contest.

At St James's Park the City Reserves played a drawn match 1-1 against Kettering. Clark scored for Exeter and Gallagher for Kettering.
