CITY SHOCK ARGYLE AND UPSET THE FORM BOOK.

Form is habitually contradictory when Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle are in conflict. By all the signs, the League leaders, Argyle, should have won this match at St James's Park, yet up came the bottom-of-the table team, Exeter City, with a lone goal triumph in a game of thrills, near misses, and grand defensive displays.

There were touches of irony about the Argyle's defeat. The goal which beat them was scored by Regan, who was a Plymouth Argyle junior before the war. As good as any player on view was Goddard, the centre half transferred by Plymouth to their Devonshire neighbours just over two years ago.

While anything might have happened in this contest on a water-logged pitch, there was no mistaking the brilliance of the City's goal. An attack developed from midfield early in the second half, and Brown pushed the ball through to Regan. It was returned to the middle, then switched to Regan again. The generally compact Argyle defence was for the moment torn asunder. Regan's first-time low and slantwise shot from just inside the angle of the penalty area sped into the far corner of the net with Shortt a powerless looker on.

Rattray missed the easiest chance of the game in the second half, when he shot straight at Singleton from eight yards with the Exeter defence standing still, appealing vainly for offside. At the other end Regan shot tamely into Shortt's hands when he should have scored.

Southern League
Kidderminster v City Reserves

The two goals by which Kidderminster Harriers beat the City Reserves were obtained by Wyllie and Passmore in the space of five minutes at Kidderminster. Four minutes before the interval Salter was beaten by Wyllie's overhead kick, and within one minute of resuming the Exeter goalkeeper made his one mistake when he failed to hold a cross shot from Wyllie, thereby presenting Passmore with a gift goal. Passmore scored again but was offside.

Harriers 2 City Reserves 0.
