Match 45
19th April 1952
Millwall (a)
Millwall 4-0 ECFC
Attendance: 14572
CITY WERE TOO SLOW AND THE FORWARDS LACKED PENETRATION.
BADLY BEATEN BY STRONG MILLWALL TEAM.
The weather was more suited to cricket than to football and the pitch at Millwall had been heavily watered before the start of the game. The City won the toss and Millwall kicked off facing the sun to force a corner in the first ten seconds. Johnson's kick was poorly placed and Kirkman cleared to midfield.
MILLWALL 4 EXETER CITY 0.
Saturday, April 19th,
at the Den.
Attendance 15,000.
Millwall:- Hinton; Jardine, Fisher; Summersby, Bowler, Reeves; Johnson, Saward, Short, Morgan, Mansfield.
City: Singleton; Walton, Kirkman; Fallon, Goddard, Davey;
Digby, Mackay, Howells, Brown, Regan.
Referee: Mr G.W.Thorpe of Swindon.
Morgan scored for Millwall with a long rising shot, which appeared to take Singleton by surprise. The game had been in progress for twenty two minutes, and until then Exeter had had an even share.
Although Morgan's shot was well placed into the top corner of the net there was not a great deal of power behind it, and nine times out of ten Singleton would have accounted for it. Following this reverse Exeter allowed the initiative to pass to their opponents, and Singleton was forced to save three times from Mansfield.
In a breakaway, however, Hinton had to move quickly to stop a point blank drive by Mackay.
After the interval Exeter were outpaced and outmanoeuvred, and indeed they faded out so badly that Millwall's victory was accomplished with ease.
Exeter's forwards were too slow, and played with little idea of team work.
Yet despite the score against them the City had the two best players on the field in Kirkman and Goddard.
