Match 46
23rd April 1952
Bournemouth (a)
Bournemouth 0-4 ECFC
Scorers: Fallon, Howells, Mackay 2 Attendance: 7000
Great Win for City
Victory at Bournemouth
Just What Was Needed.
This was a great win for Exeter City and a well deserved one. It was just what they wanted to give them a good chance of escaping from the bottom reaches of the League and thus avoiding the necessity of apply ing for re-election.
Bournemouth has been pressing hard for an opening goal when the City broke away on the right and the ball went into touch. Walton came up and took a long throw-in for Fallon to hook the ball into the net with a fast cross-shot, catching the home defence by surprise.
BOURNEMOUTH & BOSCOMBE O EXETER CITY 4.
Wednesday, April 23rd,
at Dean Court, Boscombe.
Attendance 7,000.
This unlooked for success came after twelve minutes and it served to put the Grecians on top of the world.
Whilst their defence kept out the Bournemouth attacks and forced the home forwards into poor finishing by their quick interventions and hard tackling, the City forwards were always alert for the quick raids. Howells scored in the twentieth minute when Bird fumbled the ball, and Mackay, running on to a perfect centre from Regan, who had first got the better of Cunningham, completed Exeter's first half tally in the fortieth minute.
Bournemouth's forwards were hopelessly outwitted by Goddard, Kirkman, and Walton in their attempts to reduce arrears.
Exeter's fourth goal was obtained twelve minutes after the interval by Mackay, who followed up when Drummond headed the ball backwards in the direction of the goalkeeper, and lobbed it into the net. Exeter's control and smartness on the ball made them look anything but a bottom of the table team.
Bournemouth:- Bird; Cunningham, Drummond; Woodward, Hardy, Casey; Stroud, Cheney, Cross, Gaynor, Tippett.
Exeter City:- Singleton; Walton, Kirkman; Booth, Goddard, Davey;
Digby, Mackay, Howells, Fallon, Regan.
Referee: Mr W.T.Elliott, of Swindon.
