More than usual end-of-season interest attached to Exeter City's last home match today, because victory was especially important clubs. to both The City had to win in order to keep alive their chance of avoiding an application for re-election.

Their opponents had the award of talent money if they held on to their
present position in the table (third) till the end of the season as the added incentive to victory.

One of the biggest attendances of the season at St James's Park gave the teams a rousing welcome as they entered the field. Exeter kicked off in summerlike weather, and were soon active on the left flank.

EXETER CITY 2 BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION O.

Brighton:
Ball; Tennant, Mansell; Willard, McCoy, Wilson;
Reed, McNichol, Bennett, Sirrell, Keene. Referee: Mr G.W.Pullin of Bristol.

Linesmen: Messrs C.H. Hayward and H.A.Roberts.

This was a rousing struggle between teams with contrasting styles. The play of Brighton contained many appealing features and their midfield work was at times immaculate. Their forwards, however, often attempted to be too clever, and it was then that they fell victims to a stubborn and relentless City defence in which Singleton, both backs and Goddard played magnificent roles.

In the forward line the honours undoubtedly went to Mackay, for as well as scoring two goals, he was an adroit schemer. Howells was throughout the match a persistent and energetic worker, and his centre provided Mackay with his second goal.

Chelmsford:-
Turner; Alexander, Beach; Newby, Wicks, Tiffin; Plunkett, Baldwin, Taft, Carr, Elmes.

City Reserves:-
Salter; Warren, Rowe; Harrower, Doyle, Coley; Brown, Wilkins, Smith, Mitchell, Clark.

In the first twenty minutes Exeter, by quickness on the ball and hefty kicking, soon discovered holes in the Chelmsford defence, and were two goals up, the scorers being Mitchell and Wilkins. Chelmsford then got going and as the interval approached Taft and Elmes scored in rapid succession.

In the second half the City were under more pressure, and their goal was threatened by good combined forward movements. There was, at one stage, a succession of corner kicks, which Salter and his full-backs managed to clear.

Salter, who had distinguished himself with many fine saves, was in the end beaten by Taft with only three minutes left. The Chelmsford leader netted the winning goal through his persistence in following up shots that had rebounded.
