ARGYLE ADD DEVON TITLE TO SEASON'S HONOURS.

MAJOR KEEPS EXETER ATTACK OUT.

Plymouth Argyle's Football Combination side met an Exeter eleven which was practically their first team at Home Park on Friday (kick off 6.30) and became Devon Professional Champions. In the previous game (first round) Torquay United held the Argyle to a draw and Plymouth went through to the final by calling correctly in the spin of a coin.

PLYMOUTH ARGYLE 1 EXETER CITY 0.

Friday, May 2nd, at Home Park, attendance 3,500.

Argyle:-
Major; Jelly, Smith; Taylor, Robertson, Rundle; Strauss, Willis, Adams, Machin, Anderson.

City:
Singleton; Warren, Kirkman; Harrower, Goddard, Davey; McClelland, Mackay, Howells, Fallon, Regan.

Referee:- Mr Taylor.

The Argyle's win was well merited in a game which in the latter stages became too robust and was punctuated too often by the sound of the referee's whistle.

Although for the last twenty minutes Plymouth had only ten men on the field, Taylor having been taken off with a knee injury, Major, with faultless positioning and anticipation, kept out everything the Exeter forwards could serve up. There was little good football from either side but there was no lack

of spirit. Exeter, with the sun at their backs, looked more likely to score in the first half. McClelland and Howells were the busiest attackers field. on the

Plymouth seized the initiative after the interval, and the only goal of the match, an opportunist effort, came about when Strauss. walked the ball over the line with Singleton, blinded by the glare of the sun, wondering where it had gone.

The Argyle remained on top until Taylor was taken off, then fought for the remainder of the match with their backs to the wall. Major's survival of the last twenty minutes made him the hero of the match.

CURTAIN RINGS DOWN ON SEASON 1951-1952.

CITY RESERVES LOSE THEIR LAST MATCH.

The final event of the season at St James's Park was today's Southern League match between Exeter City Reserves and Worcester. The City attacked at the outset but the Worcester goalkeeper came out and anticipated Harrower's neat forward pass before Smith could move in and collect the ball. At the other end James beat Warren but Rowe was on hand to head clear.

CITY RESERVES 2 WORCESTER CITY 4.

Saturday, May 3rd,
at St James's Park.

Duggan, outside-right, looked well in line for a goal for Worcester until dispossessed by Carter. Then Barker crossed a nice ball but in getting it under control Billington handled.

A bout of close passing by Worcester was ended by Harvey, who cleverly
robbed Billington and got the City forwards moving with a long pass to
the left wing. Hutchings and Harrower took the ball forwards only for Hutchings to shoot wide.

After twelve minutes Worcester took the lead when Duggan's long shot caught Eveleigh by surprise, and the ball shot off the wet surface. into the net.

Exeter tried hard to draw level, but poor shooting ruined most of their chances. Nevertheless, shots by Coley and Hutchings were only stopped with difficulty by Godfrey, the visiting goalkeeper.

After 35 minutes Worcester increased their lead, Billington shooting high into the net with the City defence badly positioned. Two minutes later Smith reduced Exeter's arrears after gaining possession through a miskick by Wilcox, centre half.
One minute later the scores were levelled by Brown with a drive to the
bottom corner of the net.

Whittington and Bedford scored for Worcester in the second half, and the City's only goalworthy attempt was a shot by Digby which cleared the crossbar by about six inches.

City team:- Eveleigh; Warren, Rowe; Harvey, Carter, Coley; Hutchings, Harrower, Smith, Brown, Digby.

Note :- Kicking-off at 6.30 p.m., Gillingham on their own ground beat Bristol City by five goals to nil. This means that Exeter City and Walsall have to apply to the League
