SHREWSBURY TOWN (Reagan penalty) EXETER CITY (Regan, Dailey, Murphy)
Half-time 0 - 0.
Shrewsbury:
Egglestone; Halpin, Butler;
Bullions, Booker, Crutchley; Reagan, Jackson, McCulloch, Beynon, Roberts.
City:
Kelly; Walton, Rowe;
Booth, Goddard, Fallon; Mitchell, Knight, Dailey, Murphy, Regan.
Referee:- Mr J.G. Pollard, of London.
The tree-lined Gay Meadow grounds were bathed in sunshine today, when the weather was even hotter than last week. The crowd at the start numbered about ten thousand.
An inspired second-half spell gave the City their first away victory and the home defence had no answer to well-planned raids which brought
three goals in the first quarter of an hour after the interval. The Exeter attack played grand football, with Dailey a fast and thrusting leader, Murphy and Knight clever schemers, and Mitchell and Regan strong and lively wingmen.
Kelly was a confident and capable goalkeeper, but Goddard and the backs were not so dependable as usual in the final phease of the game. Shrewsbury's goal, twenty-nine minutes from time, was scored from the penalty spot by Reagan. The penalty was given against Goddard, for a foul on Jackson. Kelly had no chance with Reagan's shot.
The leading clubs in the Southern Section with three matches played are Millwall and Exeter City, each 5 points, Coventry City, Brighton, Colchester, Southend, Watford, Reading, Bristol Rovers, Swindon Town and Northampton Town, each 4 points.

CITY RESERVES V CHELTENHAM TOWN.
From the start of this Southern League match at St James's Park the visitors played clever football, and their forwards were faster and more lively than those of Exeter City Reserves. Brown scored for them 15 minutes from the kick-off, but one minute before half-time Howells cracked the ball first-time into the net to put Exeter on level terms. Brown scored the winning goal after the interval.
Result:
City Reserves 1 Cheltenham 2.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE CUP-TIE AT ST JAMES'S PARK.
CLEAR-CUT VICTORY FOR HEREFORD.
Wednesday, September 3rd 1952.
EXETER CITY RESERVES
HEREFORD UNITED (Williams, Crowe 2)
Half-time 0 - 0.
Between the first and second teams of Exeter City is a gulf which is unlikely to be bridged without the acquisition of new players. After the champagne-brand football which the Third Division side is providing, Wednesday's evening's Southern League Cup-tie between the Reserves and Hereford was stale beer, flat, and leaving a hang-over. But Hereford were not to blame. They supplied the class and scored three goals. Exeter contributed little in the shape of endeavour or skill and scored none.
City Reserves:- Singleton; Anderson, Rose; Harvey, F.Davey, F.Murphy; Digby, Mackay, Howells, P. Davey, McClelland.
Hereford: Parsons; Layton, Hughes;
Farquhar, Thompson, McCall; Bowen, Williams, Best, Crowe, Ormston.
The match was Hereford's all the way, so completely did the visiting team dominate the exchanges that their goalkeeper's journey to Devon was not necessary. He had not a direct shot to stop.
A pitiful display by the City Reserves was partly redeemed by the sterling endeavours of Singleton, Fred Davey, Rose, and Anderson, all of whom, be it noticed, were engaged in a defensive capacity. It was expected that Hereford would win against an injury-weakened City team, but the ridiculous ease with which the victory was gained was an unpalatable surprise.
All Hereford's goals were the result of close-range efforts. All were scored in the second half, delayed action which was amazing in view of Hereford's ascendancy from the very first kick.
