BUT CITY NOT DISMAYED BY EARLY GOAL AGAINST THEM.

Thursday, September 4th, kick-off 6.30 p. m.

NORTHAMPTON TOWN (Edelston, Ramscar, O'Donnell). 3-1 EXETER CITY (Regan)

Half-time 1 - 1.

Northampton:- Wood; Southam, Patterson; Davie, Candlin, McLain; English, Edelston, O'Donnell, Ramscar, Fowler.

City:- Kelly; Walton, Rowe; Booth, Goddard, Fallon; Mitchell, Knight, Dailey, Murphy, Regan.

Maurice Edelston, formerly of Reading, always shines when he plays against Exeter City. In this, his first match for Northampton Town, which the City lost by 3 goals to 1, he scored within 13 seconds of the start. Dailey kicked off for the City, whose forward movement broke down when it reached the Cobblers' half-backs. A quick pass went smoothly along the carpet to 0'Donnell and another to Edelston, who, shooting first-time with the left foot, drove hard into the net from twenty yards, the ball never rising more than twelve inches above the turf. In Exeter's favour was the fact that they were not dismayed by this early goal against them.

Dailey began causing trouble straight away and Knight set off on a series of personal assaults that deserved at least one success. Murphy, too, captaining the City against his former club, was always dangerous when he moved up.

Resolute defence kept the City out until shortly before the interval. Then a hasty clearance by Candlin was captured by Murphy, who put Regan through, and the Exeter winger made no mistake, finding the net with a 30 yards' angled drive. Exeter looked good for both points until midway through the second half.

Then Northampton regained the lead with a goal from a scramble that followed a corner. Edelston shot against the upright for Ramscar to dart in and net the rebound. The Cobblers then redoubled their efforts and were rewarded with a goal from O'Donnell ten minutes from the end.

Attendance 11,986.
