EXETER CITY NET SIX GOALS AGAINST WALSALL.

DAILEY'S "HAT TRICK" PROVED HIS WORTH.

Saturday, September 6th 1952.

EXETER CITY (Murphy 2, Regan, Dailey 3)
WALSALL (Bridgett)

Half-time 3 - 1.

Exeter City:
Kelly; Anderson, Rowe; Booth, Goddard, Davey; Mitchell, Knight, Dailey, E.Murphy, Regan.

Walsall:-
Lewis; Rowe, Boyden; Walters, Green, Millington; Morris, Driver, Bridgett, Wright, Giles.

Referee:- Mr E.S. Vickery of Bristol. Linesmen: Messrs F.J.Toms and R.L.Buscombe.

In the ninth minute a centre from Mitchell was headed into the net by Murphy, and the persistence of Knight, weaving his way through the packed Walsall defence, enabled Regan to score Exeter's second goal from close range. Two minutes later Knight, on the bye-line, pushed the ball square and low across the turf to Murphy, who side footed it past Lewis from eight yards. Bridgett scored for Walsall with a plucky diving header a minute from half-time, but generally the visiting team was being completely over-run.

After the interval Dailey scored twice within four minutes, completing his "hat-trick" nine minutes later.

Although Arnold Mitchell did not score he was one of the most skilful and distinguished players on view. The City's attack played sparkling football, and Dailey's second half hat-trick proved that he was worth every penny of the £5,000 which Exeter paid for his transfer.

Attendance 11,955,
Receipts  £1,057. 2s. Od.

Another big crowd, numbering over ten thousand at the start, saw the City kick off from the far end, facing the sun. Attacking first on the left, then on the right, they threatened danger right away, and clever passing by Knight, Mitchell and Booth looked promising. The attack petered out, however, and it was left to Davey to put in the first shot of the match from 25 yards, the ball going over the bar. Exeter continued to play exhibition football and finally triumphed to the tune of six goals against one, their highest score since Leyton Orient were beaten by the same figure on December 29th last.
