SECOND HALF REVIVAL NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
Wednesday, September 24th 1952.
BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION (McIlvenny 2, Tennant penalty, Reed) EXETER CITY (Mitchell, Mackay)
Half-time 0 - 0.
Brighton:- Gill; Tennant, Mansell; McIlvenny, McCoy, Wilson; Reed, Bennett, Gordon, Sirrell, Howard.
City:- Kelly; Anderson, Rowe; Booth, Goddard, Davey; Mitchell, Knight, Rose, Murphy, Mackay.
Referee:- Mr W.T.Elliott of Wiltshire.
Despite the transfer of their star forward, McNichol, to Chelsea, last week, Brighton remain one of the Third Division's best sides. They were Plymouth Argyle's closest challengers during the greater part of last season and finished fourth in the promotion stakes. This year the Albion directorate are convinced they will make an even better performance.
At one point in the game at Hove on Wednesday evening it looked as if
Exeter would steal the points, if not the honours, but their brief second half revival was not good enough.
Not until ends had been changed did Brighton succeed in getting the ball past Kelly, and then, as frequently happens, they did so twice within the space of 12 minutes. Then followed a spirited Exeter revival which had the home defenders worried.
Mitchell in 67 minutes and Mackay six minutes later scored the goals which put Exeter level.
Brighton's lead was regained through a penalty kick, successfully taken by Tennant, and Reed completed the scoring three minutes from time. The attendance was 13,000.

CHELTENHAM 1 CITY RESERVES 0.
Exeter City Reserves have only themselves to blame for the fact that they did not leave Cheltenham with at least one point. They had a good share of the play and more opportunities than the home team, but could not turn clever midfield play into goals.
Exeter Reserves:- Singleton; Walton, D. Tancock; Harvey, Doyle, Armes;
Digby, A.Bolt, Howells, McClelland, Regan.
Attendance 2,000.
