KIRKMAN CAPTAINS EXETER CITY AND SCORES A GOAL.
BATTLE OF THE PLAYER MANAGERS.
Saturday, October 4th 1952.
EXETER CITY (Mitchell 2, 1 penalty, Kirkman, Murphy)
TORQUAY UNITED (Thomas)
Half-time 1 - 1.
Two men who will long remember today's "Devon Derby" at St James's Park are the rival player-managers and captains of Exeter and Torquay United, Norman Kirkman and Eric Webber, who were playing contemporaries at Southampton for several seasons.
City:- Kelly; Walton, Rowe; Booth, Goddard, Davey; Mitchell, Mackay, Kirkman, Murphy, Regan.
Torquay: G.M.Webber; Topping, A.Calland; Drinkwater, McGuinness, Towers; Shaw, Thomas, E.V.Webber, Collins, Edds.
Referee:- Mr L.R.H.Burfield of Ilminster.
Linesmen: Messrs C.G.Porter and W.J.Mardon.
The first round in the "battle of the player-managers" went to Webber. He won the toss, so the City kicked off towards the St James's Road end. But Kirkman came off best, scoring one of the goals by which the City beat their Devonshire neighbours.
Torquay took the lead in the 23rd minute when Thomas beat Kelly from close range. When Exeter were awarded a penalty for "hands" thirteen minutes before the interval Mitchell scored with a scorching shot, the ball flying into the net off the underside of the crossbar.
Kirkman's goal, early in the second half, put Exeter in front for the first time, and the result should have been made almost safe upon the award of a second penalty. This time, however, Mitchell directed his shot, forceful though it was, straight to George Webber, who caught the ball and cleared. Murphy later obtained Exeter's third goal, by which time Torquay were a well beaten side, and Mitchell shot the fourth in the closing minutes of the game.
Attendance 13,773, receipts £1,251.

TONBRIDGE 5 CITY RESERVES 2.
A large crowd, attracted by good weather and the excellent form of the
Tonbridge team this season, had plenty to cheer in the first fifteen minutes, when three goals were scored. After Constantine had struck the post Exeter broke away and Howells netted the ball. Within four minutes the home side were in the lead through Jordan and Constantine. At the interval the teams were level, Bolt having scored for Exeter, but in the second half Tonbridge put through three more goals to win by five to two.
