MISSED CHANCES COST THE GRECIANS A POINT.
AND GODDARD'S FAULTY PASS HELPS BRISTOL.
Saturday, December 13th 1952.
EXETER CITY (Mackay) 1
BRISTOL CITY (Rodgers) 1.
Half-time Exeter City 1 Bristol City 0.
Missed chances cost Exeter City a point in this West - country Derby. The Grecians had sufficient of the play to have won, but the forwards, although clever in their approaches, lacked the final punch. Mitchell, who had been the best forward in the first half, was, after
the interval the chief offender when he missed three "sitters." The experiment of playing Eddie Murphy at centre forward was not very successful. His ball control and craft stood him in good stead but he has not the physique for the hurly-burly in the middle.
Exeter City:- Kelly; Walton, Rowe; Booth, Goddard, Davey; Mitchell, Knight, Murphy, Mackay, Regan.
Bristol City: - Cook; Guy, Bailey; Peacock, White, Tovey; Jones, Eisentrager, Rodgers, Williams, Boxley.
Referee: Mr A.H.Blythe of London.
Bristol were fortunate to take away a point, from a game which was all the better for the excellent refereeing of Mr Blythe. Exeter's goal was scored by Mackay with a 25 yards' free kick through a barrier of defenders. Bristol's came when Goddard kicked weakly and put the ball straight to Rodgers, whose quick shot found the net before Kelly could move. After heavy rain this morning the weather improved and the match was played in bright sunshine.
Attendance 10,597, receipts £941. 5s. 9d.
