SWINDON DO THE DOUBLE OVER GRECIANS.
EXETER CITY CRACK UP AFTER LEADING.
Saturday, December 27th 1952.
SWINDON TOWN (Millar, Ryder, Betteridge, Bain 2)
EXETER CITY (Mitchell, Dailey)
Half-time 1 1.
Visibility was so bad at Swindon today that there was a doubt whether or not the Railwaymen's match with Exeter would run its full course. Fog descended at mid-day, but there was a slight improvement as kick off time approached, and announcements from loud-speakers stated that the match would be started providing conditions did not worsen. And to add to the discomfort the weather was bitterly cold and the pitch was carpeted with frost.
Swindon: Burton; Hunt, Radford; Betteridge, Hudson, Brandon; Ryder, Lunn, Johnson, Millar, Bain.
City:- Kelly; Walton, Rowe; Booth, Goddard, Davey; Mitchell, Knight, Dailey, Mackay, Murphy.
Referee:- Mr B.M.Griffiths.
Swindon Town became the first side to accomplish the "double" over Exeter City. Moreover, the Railwaymen inflicted upon the City their heaviest defeat of the season. It was impossible to follow the play at the far end of the ground,
where Mitchell scored in ten minutes to give Exeter the lead. Millar equalised after 30 minutes. Dailey after the interval gave the City the lead for the second time when he headed through in a goal mouth skirmish.
Then Swindon hit back with everything they had and the City defence wilted under the strain. Two goals were scored in the space of four minutes. Two more came in the last five minutes of the match. Exeter's trouble was that their defence cracked up midway through the second half. Their tackling was uncertain, and lack of speed was in evidence throughout the rear guard. Attendance 10,580.
Southern League
CITY RESERVES 1 YEOVIL TOWN 3.
Played in heavy rain at St James's Park, this match was a farce where football was concerned, with huge pools of water all over the field. Lunn, Brown, and Easton scored for Yeovil and Fallon for Exeter.
