The Exeter City of two months ago would have beaten Shrewsbury Town with ease but the City of today are not the potent force that they were and in the worst game of the season at St James Park they deserved no more than a point. The opposition was poor so were Exeter in this abad match on a bad pitch. On a surface that cut up a lot, the niceties of soccer was missing.
Many of the Citys inaccuracies were excusable but the positinnal flaws were not, The neglect to move the ball quickly and the occasional lack of resolution were not. Too many touches slowed down the tempo. Square passing was overdone. Pattern weaving on mud is futile. Go ahead methods are a match winning essential.
Singleton a late replacement for Kelly who was out with food poisoning was taken by suprise in the 30th minute when a long range shot from a near impossible angle curled into the net via the crossbar, McCulloch the scorer. City pulled a goal back on the stroke of half time when Mackay equally accepted a chance after Mitchells corner kick returned into the penalty area from Murphy. 12 minutes after the interval Mitchell fastened on to a Dailey headed pass, he took advantage of nesitancy in the Shrewsbury defence and went on to score the best goal of the match with a low drive as the Coalkeeper advanced to narrow the angle. The lead was surrendered when Fisher netted with a first time hook shot after the City defence failed to clear a free kick.
