EXETER. CITY V LEYTON ORIENT

League 3rd Division South.

St James's Park, attendance 9509

EXETER CITY 0
LEYTON ORIENT 1 (Facey)

Half-time Exeter City 0 Leyton Orient 1.

Leyton Orients goal was under fire for 25 minutes by an Exeter City side that were vastly superior in the constructive arts and were completely on top. It seemed but a matter of time before goals rewarded such intense pressure but then camé- the anti climax, Orient broke away and Facey unmarked moved in to shoot low into the corner of the net giving Singleton not the slightest chance. From then on Exeter lost their edge. Orient improved and played the more satisfactory football in the 2nd half, with direct passing instead of the tip tapping tactics which City foolishly employed to the bitter end of a disappointing game. City had two golden opportunities to equalise near the end of the game. McClelland shot hurriedly wide with only Walton to beat and when a low shot from Walton was parried out by the Orient Goalkeeper the waiting Exeter City forwards were too slow to capitalise. The Exeter marksmanship was not good and the approach work was poor. The shine had gone from that bright opening spasm and the result was that Orient won at St James Park for the first time in 16 years.
