ANGUS PUT PAIDS TO READING

Exeter City defeated Reading because they had a match-winning opportunist in Angus Mackay. He celebrated his return after a long absence through injury by heading two great goals in the first half.

Mackay stands no more than 5ft. 8 in. Yet so good was his timing, he was often able to beat taller opponents in the air. He leapt to a Walton free-kick to head past the powerless Kirkwood In the 10th minute. He jumped high above all other players in a crowded gostmouth to score the second goal from Digby's centre in the 23rd minute. Indeed, the match was a personal triumph for Mackay, who was unlucky to be denied his hat-trick when Kirkwood made a diving one- handed save after the interval. Reading strong, and forceful, lasted better than Exeter. They were in the ascendant in the second half, but they lacked a marksman, and even Blackman was remiss. Uphill, at inside-right, was the best forward in a poor Reading attack.
