EXETER CITY v COLCHESTER

WEDNESDAY 26th AUGUST 1953.

CHANGES MUST BE MADE AFTER THIS DISPLAY.

City were a side without methodthey were slower and less crafty than their Colchester conquerors and any other result would have been an injustice to the visiting tean, Where Exeter erred was in positional play and distribution of the ball, These faults persisted throughout the match and was inexcusable. Defensively City were poor, the covering was bad and the fullbacks often open to criticism either for mistimed clearances or neglect to mark opposing forwards closely. The opening goal of the game came in the 40th minute when Barlow was on the spot to head a centre from Grice into the net to give Colchester the lead, In the 61st minute Priestley slammed a first time right footed shot high into the net from Parker's corner, then for a brief spell City promised to recover, then Colchester regained the initiative, Grise threaded his way through from a Barlow pass, his perfect centre left McCierley with an easy chance and so down went Exeter, but it was no hard luck story. Changes must be made after this disappointing City display.
