Torquay v Exeter

CITY FOUGHT BUT COULD NOT MAKE UP EARLY LEEWAY

NOMAD'S MATCH REPORT

In Summer like weather, road traffic between Exeter and and buses containing loads of Exeter City supporters travelled in a steady stream to Plainmoor for the first of this season's Devon Soccer Derbies. Other large contingents of Exeter "fans" came by special railway excursions and despite the counter-attraction of Newton Races the ground was comfortably full when the teams came out. Two of last season's F.A, Cup Final officiale were on duty at Plainmoor this afternoon. The referee was Mr. B. M. Griffiths, of Newport, who refereed the Final last May, and one of the linesmen was Mr. George Sawyer, from Weston-super-Mae who was a flag-holder in the Final

The Line-Up
Torquay
Hayes: Parfitt, Drinkwater; Lewis, Webber, Norman; Shaw, Thomas, Collins, Mills, Edds.
Exeter City
Kelly: Walton, Doyle: Booth, Goddard, Dodgin: McClelland, Samuels, Mitchell, Murphy, Parker.

Before the match, persistent rumours that Jim Dailey, the Eweter centre-forward, was being transferred to Torquay United were officially denied by representatives of both clubs. There were no team changes, so the City relied on the side which gained a 1-0 victory at Colchester, while Torquay were content with the XI who drew at home with Ipswich. For each club a record was at take to-day: Torquay had yet to win a maten this season; the City had not been defeated away from home Although facing the sun, the City were the first to threaten. Mitchell and Webber were locked in a tussle the United nenalty area, but the ball rolled behind for goal kick.

Collins scores
Then Parker tested Hayes with a low shot which the United goal keeper cleared by the base of the near post.
Slack marking on both flanks of the City delence enabled the United to resume with dangerous attacks. In one of these Edds headed a fraction over, and in another Mills was Inches off the target. Next, the City's left-wing sprang into action, and, from Parker's centre.. McClelland's shot was charged down for a corner, A goalmouth in fringement gave the United a free kick, and play settled in midfield for a time.
Grand save
The City kept pegging away, and Murphy almost narrowed the gap when he shot low and first-time from the angle of the penalty area. Only a magnificent full-length save by Hayes, who smothered the ball on the line, got the United out of trouble. This Exeter spurt was not sustained, and when Doyle's weak clearance was picked up by Collins, anything might have happened, Fortunately for the City, Collins shot feebly, and Kelly cleared without difficulty. Exeter, with Mitchell on the right wing and McClelland in the middle, staged another comeback, but bad luck kept them out this time. Walton began the movemen Dy passing to Samuels. The inside man held the ball long enough to draw Norman, and then slipped it to Mitchell, A grand centre was the prelude to the United's most anxious moments of the second half and the defence was lucky to come through un scathed when urphy's shot was blocked by a defender with Hayes beaten. A return drive was foiled by Webber, and the skirmish broke up. Goddard was outstanding in a none too confident City defence which was sometimes beaten because of a failure to meet the ball. Any hopes the City may have had of retrieving the position vanished in the 60th minute, when Mills veered out to the left and beat two men before slamming the hall low into the middle Shaw was lying in wait, and from the easiest of positions he drove hard and low into the back of the net. When Shaw outpaced Doyle in the

HASTINGS BEAT CITY RES. 1-0

By R.W.

ANGUS MACKAY, Exeter City Reserves inside-left, developed a heavy cold and had to be left out of the side to meet Hastings United at St. James's Park this afternoon. He was replaced by Bill Ellaway. Newman got near the Exeter goal, and passed to Ritchie, in spite of a challenge by left-back Rowe Singleton came out to clear from the wing man. Sword, playing his first game, was in the midst of early Exeter attacks, and Knight on the right, was troubling the Hastings defence. Knight threw in to Sword, who passed it back to the wing. Knight tried from the wing, but put the ball. just over the bar Dalley, out on the right wing, sent over Sword passed through to Dailey right in front of goal, but the winger kicked outside the far post. Davey headed out an Asher attempt, and soon after Asher kicked into Singleton's hands. Griffiths lofted the ball Into the goal area from near the halfway line, but Singleton grasped it before a Hastings man could reach it. Priestley's attempt was blocked by Elliott.

NO SCHEMERS
Priestley came in from the wing with only the keeper to beat, but passed back to Ellaway and lost the ball, Nelther goalkeeper had been put to any serious test, and moves that started well in mid-field, frizzled out in front of goal. Both sides lacked schemers. King got throught to Sword, who kicked hard. Hastings keeper, Ball. dived, but the ball just went outside. Harvey centred to Sword, but the leader headed again just wide. With Priestley and Ellaway chasing the ball towards goal, Ball had to run out and kick clear. Newman tried to get to the Exeter goal, but Harvey and Davey got to him and Singleton was able to clear Priestley drove hard, but his shot glanced off a defender, Newman and Asher brought about Hastings first goal four minutes before half-time. The inside-lett passed square across for Asher to kick easily past Singleton.
Half-time
CITY RESERVES 0-1 HASTINGS

On the restart play was even more colourless than in the first half. What few movement there were that looked promising broke down through wild kicking or inaccurate passing, Neither side appeared likely to score towards the end.

Result:
CITY RESERVES 0-1 HASTINGS
