COUNTY BEATEN AGAIN
HAPPY DAY FOR MANAGER DODGIN.

Newport County 0-3  Exeter City

Attendance. 6.949.

NEWPORT COUNTY are now in a precarious position follow ng their fourth successive defeat, and their form at Somerton Park against Exeter City continues that position will not improve. There was a lack of understanding in the Newport team, and far too often they were lethargic in their approach work compared to the quick-moving Exeter side. Centre-half Crad Wilcox tried hard, but failed to cope with the newly-signed Exeter leader, Andy Donaldson. The centre-forward took time to settle into the pattern of the Exeter attack, but his two late goals proved that his experience and opportunism will be an asset to the club. On the County right flank Birch and Graham were unable to produce their fine showing against Crystal Palace, and together with left-winger Morey they were unsteady in front of goal.

LIVELIEST FORWARD

Shergold was the liveliest of the Newport forwards, but Parker failed to lead the line with the enthusiasm needed to score goals. Generally, the County defence was shaky, and Hughes, in goal, did not play as confidently as in earlier season matches. Right-half Haines covered a lot of ground in endeavour to complete the liaison between the Newport defence and attack.

Playing greater football Exeter gained an early lead after six nautes, when Mitchell scored from a Murphy pass. With Booth, the Exeter right-half, constructing many clever moves, the visiting side remained on top, but after the interral relaxed for a period. The Newport forwards, however, were weak in finishing, and they failed to score.
During the last 15 minutes Exeter went further ahead when, sweeping towards the County goal. McKie crossed for Donaidson to coolly head beyond Hughes, and three minutes later Donaldson dispossessing Hughes, turned and shot into the net.
