Queen's Park Rangers (a)

Rangers Were Out Of Luck

Q.P.R. 0 Exeter City 0

After a first half that promised a hatful of goals, mainly for Rangers, there was a gloomy second period during which neither goal was ever in danger, except for the last-minute saves by Stan Gulian from MacKay and McLelland Exeters left-wing combination.  Guilan substituted for Harry Brown who had reported sick at midday Rangers started well, with another reserve being the chief inspiration of their attacks. This was Quinn, who showed some fine touches. But none of the other forwards could get a clear shot at the rate goal or get any power behind the ball. Shepherd was Rangers' chief of the out-of-luck brigade. Three shots from him hit backs Doyle and Wharton, who were standing on the goal-line.
Exeter forwards although not having as many opportunities. played with better understanding. Donaldson, who worked the ball well threw away a glorious chance when Rangers full-back Ingham sent a ball back to Gullan Donald son was first to reach the ball be tween the back and goalkeeper, but he muffed the chance.

PLENTY OF CHANCES NO ONE TO TAKE THEM.

Kelly: Walton, Doyle; Booth, Davey, Dodgin; Priestley, DaileyDonaldson, Mackay, McClelland,

Attendance 12,943,

Scoring chances were off ration at Shepherds Bush but the forwards of Q,P,Rand Exeter City were not goal hungry, The Rangers marksmen misfired before the interval, the City defence were relieved when Shepherd (twice) and Hawkins failed with the goal at their mercy, On opportunities offered Rangers should have been ahead at half time. The balance was adjusted later because City were equally remiss within shooting range, Twice City failed after the interval, Donaldson drove a yard wide after intercepting a back pass, then McClelland shot tamely against the goalkeeper who was on the ground having saved Mackay's initial shot, A strange game which could have produced a scoring orgy, thus ended in a goalless stalemate. The big thrill of the match which though far remoed from a classic was fair entertainment value, came when Kelly made a prodigous leap to save Clayton's shot, a wonderful save from a grand shot.
