Match 11
23rd September 1953
Swindon T (h)

Exeter 3. Swindon 1

The opportunism of Angus Mackay. Exeter' quicksilver inside left brought them their first home win in five games. Mackay put them ahead and Exeter seemed set for a runaway victory. Then Swindon drew level through Bull and went on to enjoy a greater share of play. Mackay restored Exeter's lead, and in the second half which Exeter spent mostly on the defensive-Priestley broke away to score a third.

A home victory at last to cheer the faithful supporters of Exeter City. The City side accounted for a polished but thrustless Swindon Town, The new forward line was an improvement and the man who did the damage was Mackay who was in one of his brilliant moods, on his day he is a bonny attacker, Swindon's defence slow in recovery and apt to stand off far too much in the opening stage of the game was in frequent trouble. It wilted and finally broke down in the 8th minute when a Davey taken free Kick was headed by Donaldson into an open space, Mackay as quick as a flash pounced on the ball and shot hard into the corner of the net.

The visitors were back on terms in the 34th minute when a corner was not cleared by Kelly, Owen's shot was charged down and Bull's angled drive did the trick, Temporarily Exeter were in toils, but just before half time Mackay put City back into the lead after Dodgin and Dailey had combined well, Powerful shots from Dailey and Mackay were early thrills on the restart, then Swindon regained the initiative only to produce some weak shooting Owen, Lambert and Bain all being guilty of bad misses. The lapses gave City fresh heart and a Priestley goal set the seal on a spell of Exeter aggression,
