DONALDSON'S PASSES BRING EXETER GOALS

Swindon T. 2, Exeter C. 4

Swindon used half a dozen kicks to achieve what Exeter did in two. Exeter adopted an open style, finding the spaces using them and Andy Donaldson, former Newcastle leader, carried too many tricks for centre half Batchelor and laid on perfect passes, which Mackay and McClelland turned to good purpose, both scoring two. Bet teridge scored twice for Swindon.

There was no doubting Exeter's superiority. They were always streets ahead of their opponents, Had City got two or three more goals, it would have been no more than they deserved for they made Swindon look disjointed, Exeter cut out most of the frills and found the most direct way to goal Against a defence that was flying distress signals from the start, these tactics won the day. It took 28 minutes to get on the winning path, Mackay making amends for missing two earlier sitters by beating Churchill after tearing a big gap through the Swindon defence. Thereafter Exeter's victory looked certainWithin minutes McClelland got a second goal and the same player added a third soon after the interval, in a desperate rally in the fading light Betteridge headed one for Swindon, ut Mackay promptly got the fourth for City, Betteridge got Swindon's second nine minutes from the end but this time City were cruising along to a clear cut win.
