Exeter's Shock for Saints

Southampton looked anything but a promotion side when they were beaten 4-0 at Exeter on Saturday. They never struck the form which has been bringing them so many goals in recent matches.

Exeter began their goal scor ing spree after 19 minutes, when Dailey scored direct from a free-kick, shooting through a crowd of players and past the unsighted Christie. Poor defensive play by the Saints led to Mackay and McClelland netting further first-half goals for Exeter. Southampton had more of the play after the interval, but Exeter came back with another goal by Mackay.

At the end of Exeter City's best display for several seasons, player/manager Norman Dodgin said that the lads fought magnificently, the team spirit was 100 per cent, Exeter had comprehensively demolished the League leaders and Dodgin hiself played a key part in that victoryhe was the best halfback on view and installed enthusiasm throughout the City side, A twice taken free kick from which Dailey shot his first goal of the season, sent the City stock soaring. The merciful intervention of an upright when Floodthe speedy and resourceful Southampton outside right met a Digby pass and shot strongly, kept the City in the leadTwo more goals from McClelland and Mackay meant that Southampton were in the toils before the interval, The match was virtually won by the City at half time, the best that Southampton were able to produce subsequently was of no avail against an Exeter team who played inspired football. In the final phase of a gripping tussle City were the undisputed masters, whose final blow was struck by the thrusting Mackay, Exeter's halfback line had come through it's big test with flying colours in which Davey displayed positional sense and tenacity in the tackle. The City forwards outshone the visitors by taking direct routes to goal. A memorable victory well deserved.
