Exeter City on this form are a match for the best in their class. Millwall were no mean opponents, As good as the City movements in midfield were, the visiting side made a fair contribution to the entertainment value of the game which thrilled and pleased. But the Lions had little bite, they were tamed by a City team that possessed craft and the added virtues of thrust and determination,

Aided by a strong following wind, City raced to a three goal lead, defied subsequent attacks but a shot shy Millwall attack and were within sight of victory at the interval. The change over did not bring the anticipated trouble to ExeterAt no stage of the match did millwall threaten to recover from those early blows, in the 6th, 9th and 23rd minutes adminstered by McClelland, Samuels and Donaldson,

Mackay added the City's fourth goal from Donaldson's cross passMcClelland almost scored number five when well placed. Not until the last phase did Millwall show any finishing powerTheir lone goal from about the last kick of the match was a shot by Hazlett from Hartburn's pass.

Futile Tactics By Millwall
Exeter City 4 Millwall 1

Millwall were guilty of bad postitional play in defence, notably in the first half. when Exeter's eager forwards swept through time and again. It was in this period that Exeter made sure of victory. They scored thrice within 22 minutes of the start and Millwall could not recover. Charlie McClelland, an elusive outside left, started the scoring by threading his way past three opponents before shooting hard into the far corner of the net. Tony Brewer, the young Millwall goalkeeper, must accept some responsibility for the next two. He was late in moving to a cross-shot from Samuels in the ninth minute. and later showed the same fatal hesitancy to be beaten by Donaldson, who headed home a centre from Dalley. Millwall persisted in futile pattern-weaving tactics. Midway through the second half Exeter wens further ahead when Mackay was in position to meet Donaldson's perfect pass to shoot past the advancing Brewer. Not until 20 seconds from the finish did-Millwall get their only goal through Hazlett who, from close range. put in the shot which gave Kelly no chance.
