CITY DEFEATED 2-1
Ipswich lucky to gain two vital points
By LIONEL WOTTON
PROMOTION-CHASING Ipswich were the visitors to St.James's Park to-day, and opposed a City team that showed changes at full back and half-back. The defensive alteration was Norman Douglass for Stan Rowe. In the half-back line Sammy Booth reappeared after a lengthy absence from the Third Division side. Fred Davey reverted to his best position to the exclusion of Keith Harvey, Three points behind Brighton before to-day's match, Ipswich announced one alteration from the team that shared points in a goalless game with Shrewsbury. This was at inside-right, where Callaghan came in for Crowe.
The Line-up.
Exeter City: Kelly: Walton, Douglass; Booth, Davey. Mit cheil; Priestley, Ellaway, Donaldson, Mackay, Parker.
Ipswich: Parry; Acres, Fee ney: Myles, Rees, Parker: Reed, Callaghan, Garneys. Elsworthy, McLuckie.
- To-day's referee, Alf Bond, from Fulham, has been appointed to take the F.A. Amateur Cup Final.
In a dramatic start, Ipswich advanced from the kick-off, and almost scored. The visiting left wing had the home defence in a tangle, and Kelly was going the wrong way when the ball was deflected by Walton's head. Kelly made a quick recovery, and completed a good save by catching an awkward going-away ball. Continuing to dictate play. Ipswich were stopped by Mitchell and Davey in turn, but they advanced again to force a corner on the right. Grandly placed, Reed's kick was caught by Kelly. The City's goal keeper afterwards gathered a centre from McLuckie and parried a sting ing rising shot from Callaghan.
Seige raised
After being on the defensive for five minutes, the City raised the seige through the enterprise of Priestley. He nipped in. surprised and dis possessed Parker, raced ahead and passed squarely and low. The ball eventually landed at Donaldson's feet. From 10 yards' range he steadied himself. but his shot was insufficiently wide of Parry. who jumped and saved competently. No member of the Exeter team was doing better than Mitchell often noted for good interceptions and accurate passing in the opening phases. The powerfully built Ipswich inside-forwards wanted some watching, and from Garney's header, Elsworthy ran forward to stab the ball over the crossbar. Narrow escape Next a punt into the goal area by Callaghan almost cost the City a goal. Defenders hesitated and Kelly. staying at home, was almost besten by the onrushing Garneys. As it was the Ipswich leader got a touch, but ran the ball outside. A delightful movement, in which Elsworthy Garneys, and Callaghan short-passed their way down the middle, was the best of the match so far. It ended with Elsworthy's first-time shot speeding wide. In the 25th minute the City took the lead. Walton's clearance kick went to Ellaway. The inside-right retained possession sufficiently long to draw the defence, and then he released a model pass to Donaldson. A gap was created in the visiting defence. A belated attempt to close the ranks failed, and DONALDSON shot low past Parry.
The next thrill
Strong play by Douglass and Walton countered Ipswich bids for an equalising goal, and a City reprisal raid provided the next big thrill. Controlling the ball well, Donaldson had the defence running the wrong way when he passed to Parker. The outside-left responded with a good centre and Priestley hooked the Ball over from a difficult angle. Douglass was the City's saviour when he blocked a Garneys' shot on the goal-line. The visiting centre forward cracked a free kick inches over, but the third time was unlucky for Exeter. An equalising goal was scored 10 minutes before the interval. when GARNEYS beat Kelly with a slow, low shot, to which the goalkeeper dropped a fraction late. Mitchell continued to be an out standing City player, and Priestley was the best of the home forwards, but the team work of Ipswich made the greater appeal.
Half-time :
EXETER CITY 1-1 IPSWICH
Mitchell soon had his forwards moving and from Parker's backward centre Mackay hooked the ball in mid-air. The danger was anticipated by Parry, who, dropping to his knees, saved on the line.
Slack defence
Slack covering by the defence made Ipswich the present of a goal five minutes after the restart. A cross from Reed dropped Into the goal area. and Kelly was beaten by CALLAGHAN'S low shot. The City should have drawn level when Mitchell's cunningly-lobbed pass beat Parry, but Acres ran across and kicked behind for the first of two fruitless corners. Acres, getting to the ball a split second in front of Donaldson, certainly saved Ipswich that time. Exeter's one forward to threaten real danger, the speedy Priestley, outstripped the defence and crashed a cross-shot into the side of the net. Then he lobbed in a centre which Parry turned over the cross-bar with one hand. Exeter's next attack deserved, but did not get a goal. Mackay was clear, and following his cross into the centre, Ellaway ran on to the ball and shot first time. Parry was out of position, and Ellaway's effort looked a winner all the way until the ball struck a defender, to be eventually cleared at the end of the fiercest skirmish of the match.
Unlucky City
More City pressure, more thrills, and more bad luck followed. The home forwards did everything but score, and the Ipswich goal had a charmed life. Once Mackay lobbed the ball over the heads of a group of defenders. Parry was beaten, and Acres headed over his own crossbar. Another Mackay shot skimmed the near post, and next Ipswich broke away and almost scored. It was touch and go when, with Kelly late in coming out, Walton kicked the ball from the goalline.
Whirlwind finish
The tempo slackened until the City came again and in a whirlwind finish almost saved a point. The Ipswich goal was under constant pressure and Parry made one superhuman clearance when falling backwards and with his defence in a tangle, he turned the ball over for yet another corner. Throwing everything into attack, the City brought up Davey and Walton to aid in goalmouth skirmishes, but every time the Ipswich defence scrambled out of desperate situations.
Result:
EXETER CITY 1-2 IPSWICH TOWN
COMMENTS
Although beaten, the City fought bravely, especially in the second half. From the moment when Ipswich were in the lead for the first time in the game Exeter besieged the visiting goal.
It seemed inevitable that Parry would be beaten more than once, but the City forwards, with the speedy Priestley the mainspring of the attack, did everything but score. to draw Whard stru a fair While in the first half the better balance of Ipswich was impressive, there was no mistaking Exeter's superiority afterwards. For once in a while Hugh Kelly was below standard. He showed hesitancy and was far from being his normal confident and accomplished self. Individual honours in the City team went to Mitchell at wing-half and Priestley.

BATH DEFEAT CITY RESERVES 3-0
Southern League
EXETER CITY RESERVES played lively and fast football at Bath this afternoon before a crowd of 3,000 and at first showed much better constructive work than their opponents. After ten minutes Bath's outside right, Watkins, ran into the barrier in trying to retrieve the ball from going out and badly grazed a leg. He was able to return after ten minutes, but meanwhile Bath got into their stride and Singleton brought off a brilliant save from Boyd. Exeter came again and McClelland had hard luck when a hard drive from him, which was going away from the Bath goalkepeer, cannoned into one of his own players. Liley, the Bath goalkeeper, saved a terrific cross-shot from Copp. but following two corners for Exeter, McLean headed over from in front of goal. In the 24th minute PINCHBECK gave Bath the lead after a centre by Watkins, the Exeter goalkeeper failing to get across to the ball, which passed just inside the far upright. Pinchbeck, the Bath centre forward, went near shortly after wards, again from a pass by Watkins. The best effort of the first half, however, came from the Exeter out side-left, McClelland, who shot with great power. but Liley, thanks to his height of 6ft. 4in., was able to get across to the ball and bring off a brilliant save. Exeter were fighting back all the while and were unlucky to be a goal down at half-time. One of their out standing performers was left-back Doyle, while centre-half Harvey was in a dominating mood.
Half-time :
BATH CITY. 1-0 EXETER CITY RES.
Further goals for Bath were netted by GALE (penalty), and JONES.
Result:
