MCCLELLAND WAS CITY OPPORTUNIST
Teamwork at Watford;
Reserves poor-facing re-election bid
EXETER CITY made Watford look pretty poor promotion aspirants at Watford yesterday. Although the City left it late to score their two goals, both scored in the second half by McClelland, they richly deserved their win. Had Exeter's shooting matched the quality of team work the victory margin must have been greater, writes our Watford correspondent. City were the faster side, and their alertness alone made Watford look a tired lot. There was purpose in most of the Exeter movements, and few passes went astray, despite a very strong wind. The City defenders completely subdued Watford's speedy goal scorers-dusky centre-forward Roy Brown and penalty king Jimmy Bowie. Watford defenders clearly intended to tame City centre-forward Andy Donaldson. For a time they succeeded, but he soon proved his danger by narrowly missing a goal with a shot from a clear field. Knight also had several near misses.
Opportunism
PRIESTLEY played a fine game at outside-right, displaying speed and skill effectively despite the attentions of Watford's tall left-half. skipper Frank Mitchell, and bustling centre-half Phil Nolan, probably the best man in the Watford ranks. On the right wing McClelland was a fine opportunist. He snapped up a quick, unselfish pass from Donaldson, following a clever Priestley opening, to give Exeter the lead about ten minutes from the end. A few minutes later Bowie followed the risky Watford custom of passing back to his goalkeeper, and again McClelland seized his chance to score. In the final moments Watford tried to batter thrödih but the City's de fence, in which right-back Walton had been outstanding, stood firm. During this hectic burst of pressure City goalkeeper, Kelly, who had done all that was required of him effi ciently, was brought down heavily while hugging a save and had to receive trainer's treatment.
City line-up: Kelly: Walton, Douglass; Booth, Davey, Mitchell; Priestley. Knight. Donaldson, Parker, McClelland.

Reserves' plight
ADD to the number of spectators at St. James's Park yesterday, the name of Crowther, the Kidderminster goalkeeper, writes Lionel Wotton.
He hadn't a shot to stop against an Exeter City Reserves team which sadly below full strength, never looked up to Southern League class. Beaten by an only goal, the City Reserves have no more than a faint chance of avoiding a re-election seeking campaign at the end of the season. The two points went midway through the second half, when Hardiman headed through, following a corner kick, taken by Lesz. Apart from Ray Bond, and Maurice Setters in the first half, the home attack was void of thrust and craft. Kidderminster deserved their vic tory. They possessed in Simner what the City lacked, namely an inside forward capable of using the ball. Simner shot against the cross bar with Barney Singleton beaten, and so did Lesz.
Final Score
City Reserves 0-1 Kidderminster
