Biographical Text

Former Linfield player Ray Gough, who had represented the Irish League and been a member of Northern Ireland International squads, had a brief spell with Exeter City in 1963 without playing for the first-team.  Subsequently playing in Canada, and in the Football League with Millwall, he settled in Exeter where he died in 2018.

After playing Boys Brigade football, he signed for Crusaders at sixteen where he won youth, amateur and junior International caps. With interest being shown Aston Villa, Preston and Rangers, he opted to turn professional with Linfield where he was part of the side that won seven trophies in 1961/62. Appearing for the Irish League against the Football League at Blackpool in 1960, he was also a non-playing reserve for the Northern Ireland squad on occasions.

Later suffering a compound leg fracture, and struggling to regain his form, he tried his luck with the Grecians in 1963. Staying for just five months, and only ever playing for the reserves, he then moved to Canada to play for Toronto Italia.

Soon returning to England, he made 13 league appearances for Millwall ahead of joining Weymouth in 1965 and Bath City in 1969.

Settling in Devon with his Exeter-born wife, he died in Exeter in 2018.
