Biographical Text

Perry Walters made one first-team appearance for Exeter City in the Football League Trophy in 1982. He later played for the British Universities representative team before embarking on an academic career in the field of neuroscience.

Aged sixteen at the time and newly arrived at St James' Park as an apprentice, Perry made a single substitute appearance for Exeter City in the 5-1 Football League Trophy defeat at Newport County on 18 August 1982 at a time when the group stages were played during pre-season. Replacing Aidan Gibson in that game (and playing alongside fellow apprentice Martin Longden), he made no further first-team appearances but continued to play for the reserves and youth team in both 1982/83 and 1983/84.

With few contemporary sources recording FL Trophy games as full first-team games (and being somewhat regarded as being on a similar level to pre-season friendlies), it would have escaped attention that Perry counts as one of the club's youngest-ever first-teamers.

Returning to the Bristol area and playing in friendlies for Bristol Rovers, he later went to university in Manchester - where he appeared for the British universities team - and, after specialising in education and psychology at postgraduate level, gained a PhD researching into the adolescent brain and football in the area of educational neuroscience. Thereafter he founded the Institution for Development of Young Minds in Sport, worked as an education consultant for the Football Association and as an academy coach with Bristol City.
