Biographical Text
Paul Richardson, a veteran of over 200 league games for Nottingham Forest, was registered on a non-contract basis for Exeter City in 1987 but did not make an appearance for the first-team. He was known to manager Colin Appleton from their time together at Swansea.
Aged thirty-eight at the time Paul was signed as emergency cover and reportedly played a few games for the reserves in order to be 'match fit' if needed. It had been two years since the last of his dozen games for Swansea City although he had been playing for Witney Town.
Playing for Nottingham Forest, one of his local clubs, he had started in the old First Division in 1967 before the club's subsequent relegation in 1972. He played through until shortly after Brian Clough's arrival at the City Ground when he left for Chester having made 223 league appearances (18 goals).
Soon moving back up the leagues with a four-year stay at Stoke City, he also played for Sheffield United, Swindon and Swansea before later managing Fairford Town. In total he made 437 Football League appearances scoring 32 goals in the process.
