Steve Guinan had been a professional for Nottingham Forest, Cambridge United and Plymouth Argyle when he had a trial with Exeter City in 2001. He later played in the Football League with Shrewsbury Town, Cheltenham Town, Hereford United and Northampton Town. 

Starting his career with Nottingham Forest, where he made seven league appearances, he enjoyed loan spells with Greensboro Dynamo in the United States, Darlington, Burnley, Crewe, Halifax, Plymouth Argyle and Scunthorpe. He then left the City Ground in 1999 to make six league appearances for Cambridge United and thirty for Plymouth Argyle where he scored on three occasions after an earlier more productive time on loan.

Not always enjoying the best of relationships with Argyle manager Paul Sturrock, Steve departed Home Park and played for Exeter City in a midweek reserve league game against Yeovil Town when he scored in a 3-2 defeat. But, with the Grecians under a transfer embargo at the time, no deal could be made and he eventually joined Shrewsbury Town in March 2002 where he made five league appearances before dropping into the Conference with Hereford United.   

Later back in the Football League with Cheltenham Town for three seasons, he rejoined Hereford after the Bulls had won promotion from the Conferecne in 2006 before finishing his Football League career with Northampton Town. Having played for England 'C', the non-league representative side during his first spell at Hereford, he also appeared for Forest Green Rovers and Kidderminster Harriers.
