1977 White, Stewart
Biographical Text
Stuart played for Exeter City's youth and reserve sides during the 1977/78 season and was still appearing for the reserves during the following campaign. He later played for Clyst Rovers before joining the prison service.
Contacting the Grecian Archive, Stewart took up the story in his own words:
"I was invited to train with the City non-contract players whilst still at school in 1976 under Tony Long and Bob Wilson. After leaving school I was studying PE at Exeter College whilst playing for the City youth team and some games for the reserves. Chris Davey was running both sides and I recall him being furious with me when he found out that I had also been playing for the College and Devon Schools teams. Luckily he never found out that I'd also been turning out on some Sunday mornings too.
At the time, I didn't understand what all the fuss was about but later on, when injuries began to impact my season, I understood better. Indeed, for for two years from 1979 I played very little Football due to injuries, and operations. I played for Clyst Rovers in the South Western League for a bit but again got injured. I was eventually shown how to 'manage' my injuries by physio Polly Evernet (who many players from that era will remember) and started playing again. I than joined the Prison Service in 1985 and was able to play quite a bit of Football for a few years before my knees finally told me it was over."
