Ray Farnell, from Plymstock, choose to sign for Exeter City in 1955, he had represented Devon County against Cornwall.

He made his debut at inside-left for the reserves against Tonbridge on the 25th of February 1956.

He  played at inside-left for the Exeter City 1st team in the 6th of March 1955 against Bideford, in the semi-final of the Devon Bowl at SJP.
