Paul Watson, a central defender formerly with Newcastle United, had been playing in New Zealand when he had a two-month trial with Exeter City during autumn 1989.

With Newcastle United between 1985 and 1988, he had spent a year playing in New Zealand for Waikato United when he arrived at Exeter City in October 1989. With nothing arising from his association with the Grecians, he went on to play in Belgium for AS Hemptinne and in Scotland for East Stirlingshire. 

He then went into leisure management, recruitment and property before returning to football in scouting and playing care roles.
