Biographical Text

Steve Mardenborough had worn the colours of ten league clubs - including Cardiff, Newport and Swansea - when he arrived at Exeter City in the summer of 1994 on the eve of his 30th birthday. Best known for his time at Darlington, he still had time to appear for Scarborough and Colchester - and make a brief return to Swansea -  after failing to agree a contract at St James’ Park.

Having failed to make an appearance at Coventry City, he made his league debut for Wolves in the 1983/84 season before playing for Cambridge (loan), Swansea, Newport, Cardiff, and Hereford ahead of joining Darlington where he made over a hundred league appearances scoring eighteen times along the way.

Leaving the Feethams in May 1993, he spent the 1993/94 season at Lincoln City before finding himself at St James’ Park attempting to win a contract. Playing in the opening reserve fixture of the new season against Yeovil Town, the club wanted to offer him a deal but where scuppered by a recently-imposed transfer embargo.

At this point Steve’s professional career rather petered out as he played just fourteen more league games for Scarborough, Colchester and Swansea. Thereafter he made appearances for  Cwmbran, Inter Cardiff, Aberystwyth Town, Rhayader Town, Haverfordwest, Port Talbot, Llanelli, Carmarthen and finally Barry Town in 2003.
