Paul made his debut for Exeter City against Torquay United in the opening game of the 1977/78 season in the South West and Wales Youth League on the 29th of August.
He made his debut for the Reserves in the Western League at Dawlish in December 1977  

Paul was still playing for Exeter City in the Western League in 1978/79.

After leaving Exeter he played for Exmouth Town and was part of the team that reached the Semi-Final of the FA Vase in the 1984-85 season. After managing a fantastic 3-2 home victory against Fleetwood Town in the first leg, they couldn’t quite see it through to the final after losing 2-0 in the away leg.
