Darren Webb, then in his mid-twenties and working as a heating engineer, was a striker from the Leicestershire Senior league who had an unsuccessful trial with Exeter City in October 1987. Playing twice for City's reserves in midweek fixtures, he had recently been on trial with Nottingham Forest.
