John Polston played 10 minutes in a trial match, before being injured. He was to be given another opportunity to impress, but before he could Tottenham snapped him up.

He went on to play for both Tottenham and then Norwich where he played over 200 games as a defender.

John also played for Reading, where a knee injury forced his retirement, Later he became a Personal Trainer. He became assistant manager at Grays Athletic in 2002. In 2015 he was coaching with Hellenic League side, Binfield.
